Wearing ripped jeans opens up a ton of fashion ideas to complement your existing wardrobe. Ask any “Hypebeast” kid if he owns a pair and I bet his answer is a no-brainer Yes. This style looks best for casual wardrobe like button down shirts, V-necks, blouse, and even personalized printed tshirts.
For a perfect “distressed look” for your jeans, follow these steps.
- Find a good-fitting pair of jeans - The first and perhaps most important thing is to choose a pair that fits you well. Second, since you’re doing a distressed look anyway, you can buy one from local consignment shops or second hand stores for better bang for your buck.
- Prepare your tools and supplies - Ripping your jeans can be achieved by simply tearing the fabric down with anything sharp. However, there are subtle differences between the device you’ll use to do it. If you simply cut it with a pair of scissors or a knife, you’ll see that you’ll make a “clean” hole. For a more distressed style, you can use one of the following to finish the look: sandpaper, cheese grater or steel wool.
- Choose the perfect spot - It’s all a matter of preference here, but ideally you should pick the spot where you’ll feel most comfortable baring your skin off. Perhaps the most popular one is the area around the knees. Some folks go a bit higher or lower but the best spot to start from is the knee area.
- Find a smooth flat surface to work on - Before you do any ripping, it’s best to do it on a clean and smooth area to avoid any accidental scratches on the pants while you’re doing your thing. Pro tip: Insert a piece of cardboard inside the area your ripping so it’s easier to hold.
- Start with the Sandpaper - Remember our sandpaper tip earlier? Best to pull it out first. Remember, if you simply cut it through, it will look artificial. Sand the area to be cut first. This will give it the desired distressed look you’re aiming for.
- Start pulling - As you scratch and make the initial cut on the thing, you’ll notice that threads will start to appear. Don’t cut them. Instead, pull them out one by one to make the cut even more natural.
- Start Ripping - With a knife or a pair of scissors, start cutting a hole on the jeans. Start with a small hole, stop, gently tug around the threads, then repeat. This will keep things looking more natural compared to simply cutting a big hole.
Congrats! You just made your own ripped jeans! Now grab that personalized printed tshirt of yours and start flaunting it on the street!
