Fresh and Vibrant: Modern Nautical Interior Design |
Posted: September 5, 2018 |
When some people hear the term “nautical interior,” they immediately (and almost instinctively) visualize a rustic look that’s composed of a neutral base palette of whites, beiges, blues, greens, grays, with lots of textures, and distressed furniture. Wood and stone are common additions, and it gives a “nestled” look and an old, but good sense of history. Nautical interiors with a high Spanish influence also have the biggest “uber-rustic” feel. With a room depth, sense of layering, and power of accessorizing, the dream of rustic oasis will be achieved. But nowadays, designers, and even architects are keen to give the much-loved design a contemporary twist, and instill a carefree, coastal lifestyle that would look easy on the eyes. The elements are of great importance. The subtlest of blue and white rope accents, or a miniature ship model can make or break the look of beachside living.

It looks particularly pleasing when done right, and especially messy given the wrong ensembles. Create the dream nautical haven by applying and imitating appropriate styles in your home interior design. Shiplap wall treatment If the budget permits to let one splurge a bit, why not start with a shiplap wall or ceiling treatment to create a charm and subtle texture? To those not familiar with shiplap, it is actually a kind of wooden board used mostly in the construction of barns, sheds, and other rustic buildings. The traditional shiplap has a groove or rabbet, which is cut into the top and bottom, allowing the pieces to have a snug and a tight seal. The distinctive look of the shiplap is the slight horizontal reveal between each piece.

Also, it provides a bespoke texture to walls and ceilings. Where to get it: Lowe’s. They have easy-to-install shiplap wall planks you can add to your home. The planks can be fastened to your wall either vertically or horizontally, but most do the horizontal design. Lowe’s shiplap wall planks can be nailed through drywall directly into wall studs. One can just use construction adhesive to install it on ceilings (or any other surface), and nail in place to hold the pieces, and make sure it won’t fall off. Boat/ship model Having a beautiful boat model on display provides authenticity, and puts the overall aesthetic look of any place to the next level. It is nice to have a wooden ship, but before you decide on that, it is better to take a look at a few options, and search different ship pieces you’d want exactly on your home.

Blue and white color scheme The good thing about modern nautical interior, it doesn’t limit anyone to the blue and white stripe pattern (although that’s considered a classic). If anything, it challenges people to create a different flair, and be creative with the colors. Try to mix and match blue and white stuffed pillows for the living room. Maybe throw in a minimalist, white table to soften the look, or a lantern lighting to serve as an accent piece.

Where to get it: From any paint store. Play around with the colors if you want to use it for your walls. If you want other home decor, then opt to check Wayfair. You can get throw pillows, and other cute fixtures from there. Rope play Interestingly, using nautical rope and twine as home decors are brilliant, inexpensive and fun! Play around and use it as a door stopper, room divider, or wall mirror, hanging light, towel rail and vase accents. Incorporating the natural fiber into the home decor would give your home a refreshing, nautical look. Adding the touch of a twisted rope can also make the other regular decor look more rugged, but charming.

Where to get it: From a specialty store, or a furniture shop. While ropes are very common in nautical themes, sometimes it’s a challenge where to actually buy one. Try to look at a specialty store dedicated to selling boat items. You can also check furniture shops which might have one. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ckk29BlRHAUYEFIxenjqBB-GWdpM7nMFD4WtjxyEn-Y/edit
